Case Study

ARCA AT COACHELLA 2025

Henrique Ghersi brought a uniquely metamorphic approach to real-time visuals for Arca’s latest Coachella performances and 2025 tour.

Henrique Ghersi and a team of collaborators led visual design and production for Arca's recent Coachella performance, the first of many shows the artist will play throughout the next year. Ghersi began by developing the concept directly with Arca, who strongly desired to create a more pop-sequenced performance that retained the experimental spirit she's been known for since long before her monumental rise.

As Ghersi explains, "Her shows are quite different in different iterations. Some are extremely fluid. The only constant is that there's always a lot of improvisation. I think it's the best challenge you can have collaborating with an artist who shape-shifts, who's so dynamic in their work."

Over the design process, Arca remained involved, offering input and providing specific references. For one song, she wanted to implement a bullet-time effect, which ultimately informed the entire final set design in the form of modular towers, each embedded with live cameras. By fluidly cutting between perspectives, Arca and her avatar appeared from multiple angles in real time, evoking a cubist visual effect that challenged the traditional fixed viewpoint and reflected her creative ethos.

Working with Programmer Thomas Kother, Ghersi used exported Notch Blocks hosted in Notch's new Resolume plugin, which allowed for direct, real-time sequencing and proved invaluable when it came to staying locked in to the wild dynamics present in Arca's tunes, ever-shifting in tempo and intensity. Combining Notch and Resolume also allowed the creative team to have MIDI control over exposed parameters and automated camera sequences that they could override for more improvisatory moments.

Combining Notch and Resolume, we could speed things up, slow things down, add, subtract, automate, and override in no time. We had exactly the flexibility that’s key to working with her music.
