Case Study

AFTERLIFE

Jim Warrier uses Notch for Tale of Us’ Afterlife events, which have toured nearly all corners of the globe since 2016.

Over the past half-decade, Artist Jim Warrier has used Notch as the primary tool for visualising Tale of Us' Afterlife events—a series of boundary-pushing techno celebrations founded by DJ duo Carmine Conte and Matteo Milleri.

Using an entirely real-time process featuring field and particle systems and highly manipulated 3D geometry without live cameras, the creative team can quickly adapt to different screen sizes and resolutions, from 4K to 16K, as the tours progress.

Working alongside Creative Director Michael Titze, Warrier begins the multiple stages of production by generating initial content. After several review feedback sessions and further refinement, Warrier adapts the final visuals to various canvases and lighting setups.

The final stages involve Lighting Designer Pascal Bach, whose pixel-mapping techniques allow the visuals to bleed beyond the screens, creating a cohesive and immersive experience for the audience, blending the physical and digital.

I can get the exact same photorealistic quality I get out of other software in an absolute fraction of the time with Notch’s range of renderers.
Jim Warrier, Digital Producer

Warrier has found Notch's newest features, including its range of four render engines and seamless integration with other tools, essential to his work. "But I don't really need to use any external tools," he explained about his recent process. "Generally, my workflow is all in Notch. The results have been mind-blowing."
